
Fitness is more than exercise
The HMP is about exercise but that is just the start of it. We are here to help with every major factor of health. We are here to help sift through the noise to find and implement the best practices for you in your life. While we work in any area that is relevant to fitness we breakdown fitness into five key factors.
One way to visualize these factors is as a pyramid with things like nutrition sitting at the base and building the foundation for fitness. There is definitely some truth to this. Things like nutrition truly are the foundation. If we don’t sleep right, eat right and have the right mindset all the exercise in the world won’t make us fit.
A pyramid though only tells part of the story. The factors can be a circle too with one factor affecting another. Studies show that exercise is important to keeping people on track with nutrition. A night or two of bad sleep can lead to physiological changes that can alter food choices. Just having one or two of the factors covered isn’t enough.
Community
We are an exercise company but we put community first. More and more studies show Americans are isolated, missing that sense of connection. Example after example illustrate how crucial that sense of belonging and support are for optimal health. That’s why we start with community. It’s the foundation that fitness and health is built on.
Exercise
Exercise is so much more than a way to burn calories. We need exercise to keep our bones dense, our muscles strong and our mind right. We need to move our body through full range of motion to keep our joints in working order and our flexibility intact.
For exercise to be effective it needs to be broad, full range and varied. It also needs to be progressive, it needs to constantly challenge you. Too many people fall into a routine and do the same thing over and over. The body simply stops having to adapt. Exercise needs to be a lot of things but it needs to be fun, so it keeps you coming back for more year in and year out. That is our goal.
Nutrition
It’s not just about waistline. Nutrition, as is the case with exercise what we put in our bodies goes beyond simple energy balance. It can affect every factor of life and every fiber of our being. Our aim is to devise and educate on nutrition best practices that deal not only with food quantities but also qualities. Nutrition sits right on top of community on the health pyramid, all the exercise in the world will not overcome a bad diet. We want to help you eat for your life in a way that fits into that life.
Mindset and attitude
There are times when all the factors of fitness may be outside of our control. All but one. Our mindset is never outside of our control. Our internal dialogue, how we react, and our attitude is all we ever have full control of. Our outlook is crucial to not only health and fitness but to accomplishing our goals in life. It’s not easy learning to control your mindset may be the single most important thing you do.
Lifestyle
This is a catch all for everything that is relevant to health and fitness but not listed yet. Everything from sleep to sun exposure fall into this group. Lumped together for simplicity not because its less important a lot of the lifestyle factors can be absolutely crucial to fitness. Sleep alone is just as important as nutrition in the fight for fitness but have 5 pillars is easier than 87 pillars to process.
